چکیده

Soil moisture is one of the most important key physical parameters in hydrological and environmental processes. During the past decade, remote sensing measurements have been widely used to provide mean surface soil moisture on a large spatial scale because conventional ground based measurements are not always available and require more time and cost. However, very few studies have been conducted to estimate the potential of remotely sensed soil moisture to correlate with hydrological processes. This study identified that remotely sensed soil moisture data, Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer E (AMSR-E), had a reasonable relationship with surface water elevation after statistical scaling. Simple regression models as a function of soil moisture were developed to predict surface water elevation. This study identified the potential of remotely sensed soil moisture to better understand hydrological processes.

Passive microwave soil moisture evaluations by ground based measurements in Korea

Passive microwave sensors have many advantages including the ability to directly measured soil moisture at large spatial scales regardless of weather conditions or time of day. However, microwave-sensed soil moisture’s inevitable limitation is that it cannot describe hydrology at the watershed because its retrieved soil moisture scale is too large. Thus, microwave-sensed soil moisture requires ...

Modeling and assimilation of root zone soil moisture using remote sensing observations in Walnut Gulch Watershed during SMEX04

Soil moisture status in the root zone is an important component of the water cycle at all spatial scales (e.g., point, field, catchment, watershed, and region). In this study, the spatio-temporal evolution of root zone soil moisture of the Walnut Gulch Experimental Watershed (WGEW) in Arizona was investigated during the Soil Moisture Experiment 2004 (SMEX04). Root zone soil moisture was estimat...

Mapping Root Zone Soil Moisture Using Remotely Sensed Optical Imagery

Field-based soil moisture measurements are cumbersome. Remote sensing techniques based on active or passive microwave data have limitations. This paper presents and validates a new method based on land surface energy balances using remotely sensed optical data ~including thermal infrared!, which allows field and landscape-scale mapping of soil moisture depth-averaged through the root zone of ex...

Evaluation of the Effect of Pre-processing of the Remotely Sensed Data on the Actual Evapotranspiration, Surface Soil Moisture Mapping by an Approach Using Landsat, DEM and Meteorological Data

A practical approach that combines Landsat TM, DEM and in situ conventional meteorological data to estimate the actual evapotranspiration (ET), and to predict the surface soil moisture content (SSMC) in a heterogeneous terrain was proposed and applied to the Urumqi River Basin, Tianshan, China. The successful application of the proposed approach to this meso-scale watershed was found closely re...
